Yeah,
Two more features of UIDAI ready to shake you.

4G Identity Solutions has won the bid to provide biometric capabilities required in UIDAI project.
This includes devising capability to capture both fingerprints and iris recognition.
First, these devices will tested for UIDAI Proof of Concept (PoC) project, which will says whether it is technically feasible for India or not. If everything goes well, hope so, then it will taken in implementation.
Biometric capability also adds up in these two features of UIDAI:
1. Authenticating a Person: Through UID number and internet connection, one will be able to authenticate a person against the supplied UID.
2. Anywhere: Online presence of UID authentication can provide a platform to authenticate a person almost anywhere in India; what you need is just an internet connection.

UIDAI has given responsibility to manage the database of the all members to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
BMC chief has commented that the number will be issued to everyone irrespective of his/her nationality, which means all Bangladeshis residing in India will also be given the unique identification number.
This seems very strait forward; let’s hope it is!
The reason being UIDAI has never claimed of being card/proof identity or any kind of proof of being Indian national; it has recently mentioned that it’s sole purpose is to provide unique indenty every person in this country. These are steps of caushin taken by UIDAI, of course Mr. Nilekani has learned lessons from some countries doing such projects.
The number will not be a secret number as SSN in U.S. or SSIN in Canada, rather it will be more like your PAN used for Indian Income-Tax purposes, which can be shown to everybody without any fear of being misused.
After putting its tenders open to public view, UIDAI would have been lot of confusion to select the bidder as many companies were fighting for India’s biggest budget project till date.
Finally, Ernst & Young (here and here) is the one who will be doing automation part – project initiation, project planning, infrastructure and data warehouse setup, strategy planning and many more stuff.
I believe, this is only for the first bid and there should be many more bids and many more fights coming up.
So, wait and watch; and keep reading this blog!
Now it seems that UIDAI is going very very specific to its job; date of birth, place of birth and state will not be a part of it.
Furthermore, children will also get a number.
Since, for children the finger prints are still developing, there may be some change in the process for them.

We expect all kinds of issues to come across the way of everything we do, don’t we?
Well, some tech issues are started with UIDAI as well…it does not seem to be show-stopper right now…let’s see.

A step forward:
There will be three states where Unique Id give away process will start in Feb 2011 and Karnataka is one of those.
No details of the other two ‘lucky’ states heard so far…
I think it could be Bihar and Gujarat as Mr. Nilekani has visited both and admired their e-Governance as well. What you say?
